if you have seen this message lately while using blog writer , its very likely your wordpress is a new install or the updated version

I got the same eror with one of my blogs recently . which i was trying to add to windows live writer @ www.penny-hopefuls.com

Here is the solution i worked out

if you reach the stage where it asks "//xmlrpc.php">http://<hostname>/<wp_path>/xmlrpc.php"

you need to login to wordpress go to settings /writings/

under writings/remote publishing/     .. tick mark both boxes  /GO TO BOTTOM AND click SAVE.

 

NOW GO BACK TO windows LIVE WRITER AND

input the details in this message you get"//xmlrpc.php">http://<hostname>/<wp_path>/xmlrpc.php"

hostname is your domain eg. www.penny-hopefuls.com

you can try these either ways  (examples below replacing with your domain)

http://www.penny-hopefuls.com/xmlrpc.php

or

http://www.penny-hopefuls.com/wp-admin/xmlrpc.php

http://blahblah.com/whatevadirectory/xmlrpc.php

(where your wordpress install is not in the main directory)
