New futuristic city Car that drives itself

MIT student Franco Vairani looks at models of the ‘City Car’ , a collapsible battery-powered car he designed for his thesis (Reuters Photo)

CAMBRIDGE (MASSACHUSETTS): Wouldn't it be nice to drive a car into town without worrying about finding a parking space?
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have devised just such a vehicle, a futuristic "City Car" that could even drive itself.
Once at your destination,http://cities.media.mit.edu/projects/citycar.html the vehicle's computers would, at the press of a button, look for a parking spot behind others like itself, and then fold roughly in half so you could stack it there as you would a shopping cart. "We have reinvented urban mobility," said Bill Mitchell, a professor in architecture and director of the project at an MIT think tank in Cambridge, just outside Boston.
The vehicle hasn't yet been built. But a miniature mock-up version has gone on display at a campus museum, and there are plans to build a full-scale model this spring.

The dozen or so engineers and architects on Mitchell's team are confident their computer-generated work is on target.
They feel their golf cart-sized vehicle could provide a novel solution to the chronic traffic congestion afflicting cities across the United States, Europe and Asia - not to mention pollution and energy use, since it would run on a rechargeable battery, the researchers say. On the drawing board, their two-seater is roughly half the size of a typical compact automobile and a little smaller than the Smart car made by Mercedes-Benz.
"It's a virtual computer on wheels," said Franco Vairani, designer of the vehicle's foldable frame, which he predicts will shrink the car to as little as an eighth the space needed to park the average car. While parked, it would hook up to an electricity grid for recharging, he added.

sharkride.com/blog/category/design/
Hundreds could be stacked around a city and "you would just go and swipe your (credit) card and take the first one available and drive away," Vairani said, seated by his computerized drawing board. People wouldn't have to worry about where to park their cars in town and automobiles would take up less urban space, leaving more room for parks and walkways, he added.
Peter Schmitt, a team engineer, says the car would have independently powered robotic wheels and be controlled using a computerized drive-by-wire system with a button or joystick.

Hacking that wireless network

If you got a wire less pc or a wireless laptop with wi-fi you will not be new to seeing other people networks and at some pert of time wished to see that net work or use it.

Now there are hacks out there on the internet that shows you how to do this, but it is illegal and not right. but offcourse if you have a friendly neighbour network that you can take permission to try gain acesss then the tutorial below is a real good one . check it out

Cracking WEP with aircrack-ptw in Windows with AirPcap and Cain

Primer

Recently a team of German cryptography researchers perfected methods to recover a WEP key faster than ever before. The older Weak IV attacks generally needed between 500,000 and 2,000,000 packets to recover a 128-bit WEP key. In contrast, the new PTW method needs a mere 85,000 packets to have a 95% chance of recovering the WEP key.

Unlike the Weak IV attack, instead of collecting weak IVs, the PTW method collects ARP requests and responses to attack the encryption. ARP requests can either be collected naturally, or can be generated via packet injection. Until recently, packet injection was only possible in Linux. With the advent of the AirPcap USB adapter, and some unsupported beta drivers, it’s possible to inject packets in Windows. Update: CACE have released AirPcap Tx, which features fully supported packet injection, for an added premium.

In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through the process of recovering a WEP key, via the PTW attack, in Windows. For this you’ll be using the AirPcap USB adapter, Cain, aircrack-ptw, and the aircrack-ng suite.

Legalities

It’s important to point out that these methods should only be applied with permission from the owner of the target AP. You should either be auditing, penetration testing, or demonstrating the weaknesses of WEP in a Test Lab environment. You should not be using these methods to get “Free internet”!

Preparation

You’ll need:

Now you’ll need to prepare the environment:

  • Install the beta drivers (or if you have AirPcap Tx, install the drivers from the CD-ROM)
  • Plug in the AirPcap
  • Install Cain
  • Extract aircrack-ng to c:\airpcap\
  • Extract aircrack-ptw to c:\airpcap\
  • Move aircrack-ptw.exe to the bin folder (this is no longer required - see my notes)
  • Optional: To make things easier, move the contents of the bin folder to c:\airpcap\. You’ll then be able to run aircrack-ptw.exe with just c:\airpcap\aircrack-ptw.exe mycapture.cap
Let’s get cracking

I added narration to the video this evening at 20:36. It’s my first attempt at narration, and a little noisy, but I’m sure things will improve as time goes on! :)

Countermeasures

The primary counter measure to this WEP attack is to cease using WEP and switch your Access Points to WPA encryption. As you’ve seen in this video, WEP is just too easy to crack. For further reading, Wikipedia has an excellent entry on WPA.

Access Points are so cheap now that, if your AP doesn’t support WPA via a firmware upgrade, you can easily afford a new one with full WPA or WPA2 support.

Notes

Note 1: After recording this tutorial, I’ve become aware that, as of version 0.9, aircrack-ng.exe natively supports the PTW attack by using the -z switch. For example: aircrack-ng.exe -z mycapturefile.cap. If you want to use this attack, download aircrack-ng from the authors, and replace aircrack-ng.exe in c:\airpcap with the new one.

Note 2: The whole process from starting capture to recovering the WEP key takes about 10 minutes.

Note 3: It is important that you get the Packet Injection drivers and the aircrack-ng release specifically for the AirPcap adapter, or this will not work.

Note 4: Just to summarise the steps in the video:

  1. Run Cain and passively scan for the target AP, making a note of the Channel number.
  2. Using the channel number, tell AirPcap to inject packets once it has collected an ARP request. (You can sometimes force an ARP by sending Deauth. To do that, right click on the client. Otherwise, repair the Wireless connection on the client connected to the AP)
  3. To use the PTW attack, you need to collect all packets. By running airodump-ng you can collect all the packets generated by Cain. The reason we use airodump-ng instead of Cain, is that Cain only collects WEP IVs.
  4. Once you’ve collected enough packets, run aircrack-ptw against the capture file.

Reveal Wi-Fi Network Passwords with WirelessKeyView

wirelesskeyview-header.gif
Windows only: By default Windows hides WEP and WPA keys stored on your PC to connect to various Wi-Fi networks, but freeware utility WirelessKeyView lists them for you. When you've forgotten that Wi-Fi network key, run WirelessKeyView to see all the networks your Windows PC has ever connected to using its default Wireless Zero Configuration mechanism. (This utility doesn't reveal keys stored by third-party network connection software.) Delete keys from old networks that you no longer need, and easily copy keys to the clipboard to send or save. WirelessKeyView is a free download for Windows XP and Vista.

Google transit chooses Perth Australia as first city on its service

Perth will be the first Australian city to access the latest addition to the Google stable - Google Transit.

Whay is google transit ?

Today, we are happy and proud to tell you that their efforts have resulted in a new Google Labs experiment: Google Transit Trip Planner. With it, commuters will be able to easily access public transit schedules, routes, and plan trips using their local public transportation options. This first release covers only the Portland, Oregon metro area, but we are working to expand our coverage very soon. (If you're from a local transit agency interested in being included in Google Transit, we would love to speak with you. Just write to us.)

From : http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/12/public-transit-via-google.html

The online mapping site, incorporating transport options and business listings, is already operating in cities across the US, Canada, France, Italy and Japan.

With its first Southern Hemisphere release, users will be able to look up directions within Perth and obtain travel options, including departure times for public transport and step-by-step driving instructions.

Are You NEw to google transit . Check it out here

http://www.google.com/transit

They will also be able to look up businesses in the area to be marked on the map.

Google said the site would be available "within weeks".

One of the biggest obstacles to people using public transportation is learning how the system works--where to go, when to go, etc. Any transit agency worth its salt has trip-planning tools available online, but they generally suffer from poor-to-horrible interfaces, due to lack of development money. This keeps riders away due to confusion. Even if a good system exists in one city, it is always different from that of another city, and newcomers won't know where to find it. Having transit trip-planning data readable and presentable by a clean, easy-to-understand, universal tool will make a big difference. It looks like that's starting to happen.

Google now does public transit.

"It's very, very convenient," Google Australia and New Zealand's Head of Engineering Alan Noble told reporters at the product preview at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday.

"We've taken public transportation information, which is sometimes quite difficult for mere mortals to understand, and made this very easy to use on Google maps.

"What we have is all this information - transit information, driving directions, business listings - and put it in one immediate location, namely Google Maps, which as (US-based chief executive officer) Eric Schmidt pointed out, was developed right here in Sydney."

The executive director of Perth's public transport service providers Transperth, Mark Burgess, said they were eager to provide the transport information to Google as it would help improve the service.

"Transperth has always aimed to connect Perth locals and visitors with their options for public transport," Mr Burgess said in a statement.

"We're excited to make this information available to all the Australians who already turn to Google Maps for directions, and most especially to the local Perth community."

Mr Noble said he hoped a successful roll-out in Perth would encourage other state transit providers to make their information available to Google.

"We're very happy to have started Google Transit here in Australia in Perth, but we're very eager to roll this out throughout Australia and look forward to making this transit information available to all Australian cities as soon as possible," Mr Noble said.

Dr Schmidt told reporters the Google Maps program was developed by four Australian computer engineers and was now the country's number one mapping site.

"Google Maps has been a huge phenomenon globally," he told reporters.

"It is one of the two or three key things that guides our success."

Sony’s VAIO TP2G shaped Living Room PC " box Hat PC "

The Sony Vaio VGX-TP2G features an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, a 500GB hard disc drive, and a Blu-ray Disc Combo Drive that will stream HD movies via HDMI. It will also come with a wireless keyboard with touchpad and remote control for easy access, says Sony.

Sony’s ‘box hat’ shaped Living Room PC has arrived in Australia, giving consumers a stylish desktop computer that comes with HDMI, a Blu-ray reader (and DVD/CD burner) and Vista Home Premium (with Media Center) to challenge the stand-alone Blu-ray player and Sony’s own PS3. Should the Living Room PC live in your living room?

VAIO TP2G

Sony is a company with many paths to the nirvana of digital home entertainment, offering Blu-ray players shaped like a DVD player, the PS3 games and entertainment console, the new ‘Living Room PC’ that plays Blu-ray discs (but can’t record them) and a internal 5.25-inch Blu-ray burner that can be used with any existing desktop computer.

Pricing And Availability

The Sony Vaio VGX-TP2G is now available with an RRP of $2,399.

Product specifications:

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.10GHz), 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 500GB HDD, Windows Vista Home Premium, NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT GPU with 256MB dedicated video memory; Blu-ray Disc Combo Drive

See: www.sony.com.au

Sony is also a company famed for  interesting technologies and designs, with the new Living Room PC, previewed at CES 2008,  now making its way to Australian retail stores, and sporting a round, box-hat shaped design that’s striking and, similar to one of Sony’s marketing slogans, ‘unlike any other’.
To create theVaio-branded Living Room PCC, model number TP2, Sony had to use notebook parts, known for their small size, giving Sony the ability to create a round design that would be much harder to create using standard desktop components.
Sony has also included an HDMI connector and a playback-only Blu-ray drive, although the drive is capable of reading and burning CDs and DVDs. There is also an HD TV tuner built-in, and when plugged into any TV or display device with HDMI, the Living Room PC is a great ‘digital entertainment hub’ for any home.
So why would a consumer want Sony’s Living Room PC – priced at AUD $2399 – instead of the AUD $699 PS3 which can also browse the web, play games and play Blu-ray movies?

Home entertainment comes full circle with the VAIO TP2G. It is a totally new concept in home computers that fits both your modern lifestyle and diverse computing needs. It's a perfect fit for your home, artfully blending superb styling with great features for any home computing task.

Including a Blu-ray Disc™ Combo Drive, you can connect to your Full High Definition BRAVIA, via HDMI and sit back to enjoy your favourite Blu-ray movie. The latest accelerated Intel® Core™2 Duo processor also provides great power for nearly any application and the 500GB HDD gives you ample room for photos, videos and music.

There is also a colour-coded remote commander specially designed for a unique software developed specifically for the TP series - "VAIO Living Browser" and you can also sit back and use the TP from the ease of your couch with the supplied wireless keyboard with integrated mouse pad.

Now HP Compaq 2133 Umpc Mini laptop Vs Eepc

Has Asus set off a new price war in the mobile computing landscape? It was only a few years ago that brand-name laptops started to slide in under the $1,000 mark.

Introducing the NEW HP Compaq 2133 UMPC laptop

Suprisingly this model is not yet listed on http://www.hp.com.au/

Then the Taiwanese company released Eee PC Its super-compact size and weight, surprisingly decent feature set, Linux OS and $499 price tag all ensured the Eee PC found favour well outside its intended target audience of school kids. Travellers and tech tinkerers alike have adopted the Eee PC as a brilliant little ‘second PC', and in some cases even a second laptop. We can't say for sure, but the current word has the HP 2133 UMPC priced in the $600 range, making it a good chunk more expensive than the Asus Eee PC. For $600, consumers may be more inclined to buy a full notebook than an in-between unit like the HP 2133. To better serve as a "lifestyle companion device", HP might need to cut some costs

Buy it from amazon here

This has ignited interest in the mini-notebook form factor and proven that if you get the formula right - if you nail the correct mix of size, features and price - you'll find plenty of buyers.

Now HP is coming to the party, and it's dressed to steal all the attention away from Asus. There's no doubt that the Compaq 2133 (which distinctly needs a catchy consumer-friendly brand name rather than Yet Another Model Number) will be aimed at a more professional slice of the consumer and perhaps even business market when it lands in the US sometime in April.

HP's Compaq 2133: you could call it an EeePC wanna-be, but it looks more like an EeePC killer

The notebook itself looks more like Apple's classic 12in PowerBook G4, thanks to clean lines and an anodised aluminium chassis, although this plays some part in tipping the weight to 1.2kg. The 8.9in widescreen panel runs at a squint-worthy 1366 x 766 (WXGA), includes a tiny webcam and is perched above keyboard that HP claims is 95% of full size.

HP COMPAQ 2133 UMPC SPECS at a Glance

“The HP Compaq 2133 “lifestyle accessory” features a big, scratch resistant 8.9-inch 1366 x 766 (WXGA) display, ExpressCard/54 slot, Wireless LAN, nearly full-sized QWERTY (95% of full), integrated webcam, and optional SSD in a 2.5-pound anodized aluminum sex pot running Vista or Linux,”

The stylish silver Compaq 2133 seems to mimic Apple's 12in PowerBook G4 in several aspects of its design .It also has boasts technology handed down from more conventional notebooks, such as a Gigabit Ethernet and 3D accelerometer to protect the hard drive from sudden knocks and shocks. That won't be an issue if you choose the optional solid state drive, although we don't yet know its capacity (but we'll take a punt on 8GB).

On the communications front is 802.11b/g wireless, a single ExpressCard/34 slot (for the skinny cards favoured by devices such as 3G HSDPA wireless modems) and two USB ports (one either side of the keyboard).

Buy this model from Amazon here

Cent-rino: the tiny Silverthorne CPU is barely as large as a US penny, although it costs a little more...

The QWERTY keyboard, extends all the way to the edge of the unit, ensuring that it gets as close to being a full-sized keyboard as possible. The screen is bigger than the Eee's 7-incher, we hear, because the HP 2133 comes with a 8.9-inch widescreen (1366x768). There's also a one-inch bezel all the way around.

CELL PHONE ROBOTS - PhoneBraver from japan

Robot buddy Cell Phone

Cell phone robots or mobile phone robots has become a reality.

Those who feel a bit lonely just talking on the phone, a Japanese company is offering a cell phone that turns into a robot buddy ready to chat.

Feeling Lonely? Robot buddy Cell Phone will give ...

"Softbank Mobile Corp. has come out with a cool gadget that has created a lot of interest even before its arrival in the market. It is a Robot buddy Cell Phone. It will act like a small robot and will do the work of a traditional cell phone."

Softbank Mobile Corp's new mobile line looks like a small humanoid with attachable arms and legs, with the screen showing various faces.
The PhoneBraver will be released in April after a character in an upcoming television drama series entitled "Cell phone Investigator 7."The telephone comes with enough artificial intelligence to learn the user's habits.
If the user calls a particular person many times, a text phrase such as "You're calling her often these days, aren't you?" might appear coming out of the face's mouth, according to Softbank Mobile spokesman Katsuhide Furuya.
"We haven't decided on specifics yet on the communication between the user and mobile, but your mobile would grow into a buddy different from others that are unique in the world," he said.
The PhoneBraver does not move by itself but can strike a pose with movable joints. The price is not disclosed yet.
Japan is known for its fondness for humanoids, which have been put to use as security guards, receptionists and for other functions in a country with a declining birth rate.
Japan also has cutthroat competition in mobile telephones, with three main companies constantly trying to find new incentives to snare users.
The number of cell phone subscriptions topped 100 million in Japan at the end of December against the nation's total population of 127 million, according to industry data.
