Treasury is confident the nation’s mining and investment boom will withstand the global slowdown and falling commodity prices, and provide valuable support for growth.

Prices for key commodity exports coal and iron ore have slopped on global markets in the past three months amid slowing demand in China and mounting concerns Europe will relapse into recession.

But Treasury does not expect price falls, including a 20 per cent slump in the value of iron ore shipments from about $US170 a tone to $US134 a tone, to undermine resource sector investment of up to $450 billion.

“The recent drop in iron ore prices is not expected to have a significant impact on activity as contacts attribute it to seasonality, additional supply from South America and large stockpiles of iron ore in China, which are factors unrelated to the longer-term dynamics driving demand for Australia’s resources,” Treasury said in a report release on Friday.

It said consultation with businesses showed ” the deterioration in global conditions and recent falls in no-rural commodity prices are not expected to have a significant impact on activity or investment”.

The strength of global commodity demand has become increasingly important for the nation’s growth prospects. Last week, official figures confirmed the economy would have shrunk in the September quarter if not for mining-related investment.
